Predator films ranked

7. The Predator (2018)

2018s The Predator wasn't just a disappointment. It was a disaster. Initially, it seemed the film had a chance to be a success. The biggest factor was the director. Shane Black (who played Hawkins in the 1987 original film) was the director and Predator fans were excited. However, when they arrived at the cinema they're excitement was met with disaster. The films main issues were poorly constructed characters and a ridiculous amount of plot holes, largely due to the extended reshoots that the film had. Even the action with the Predators was lacklustre and the film felt a lot more like a comedy than a sci-fi horror action film that was promised before the film's release. Overall it was a major disappointment and is something that may need to be completely erased from the franchise's timeline in order for it to move forward.

6. Predator 2 (1990)

Predator 2 had a lot to live up to. A fantastic opening to the franchise meant high expectations and unfortunately, 1990s Predator 2 could not deliver. It swapped the central American jungle to the war-torn streets of LA and on paper that seemed like a great idea. However, the acting was awful and Arnold Schwarzenegger was replaced by Danny Glover, and the difference in quality was huge. The film was not all bad though. There was plenty of Predator action in it and the film added many ideas to the mythology of predators, allowing them to be developed further in later sequels. While it is definitely very rewatchable there are plenty of better alternatives in this franchise.

5. Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (2007)

The second crossover between the Alien and Predator franchise has few good qualities, but those qualities are what land this film at number 4 on this list. The first Alien vs Predator film was seen as very tame when it came to kills, which is not what fans wanted to see. However, Requiem upped the kills by a factor of 10. Whether it was the predator killing humans or the monstrous new hybrid the predalien killing humans the film delivered in that respect. However, the human characters were very forgettable and most of them served little purpose other than to get killed in a variety of different, bloody ways.

4. Alien vs Predator (2004)

The crossover fans had been waiting to see ever since the hint in left in predator 2 that these two franchises exist in the same universe. While it got off to a painfully slow start, AvP picks up rapidly, and the alien-predator fights that followed fulfill fans' dreams. At times it does feel like the directors are trying too hard to please fans of both series, but they still deliver more than satisfactory action scenes. However, the biggest common complaint of the film was the lackluster kills. The film delivered in many regards, but gory kills were not one of them. However, that advice was taken on for the sequel.

3. Predators (2010)

So far, 2010s Predators remains one of the highest quality sequels that the original has received. The concept was great, allowing a new group of killers to be transported to an alien planet-hunting preserve where 3 new, deadly predators lie in wait. The action was amazing and any moment that any of the 3 predators are on screen is a highlight of the film. There are very few downsides, the most notably the horrific miscasting of Adrian brody, who feels more like he is trying to play batman rather than play an action hero on an alien planet. Apart from that, the film delivers in all other aspects and promised much more for future sequels

2. Prey (2022)

Now, this was an unexpected hit. When it was announced that Prey would not get a theatrical release, I was skeptical.  However, the quality of the film is so great that having it on streaming didn't take away from the experience a whole lot, apart from not being able to see this beautifully shot film on the big screen. A unique concept was something fans were desperate for, and that is exactly what we got with Prey. A Predator movie set in the 1700s, with a less advanced hunter coming up against less advanced humans. This film was so close to matching the original on quality, with some great characters and a truly brutal newly designed Predator that has more in common with 2010s Berserker Predator rather than the ones we are used to.

1. Predator (1987)

The original predator film is still head and dreadlocks (see what i did there ;) ) above the rest. The characters were excellent. The action sequences were exhilarating. I perfectly introduced what would quickly become one of cinemas most iconic movie monsters. The perfect opening that never has, and may never will be topped.
