Star Wars films ranked

11. Star Wars the Last Jedi (2017)

Awful. Just plain awful. The force awakens was a promising start to the sequel trilogy. The Last Jedi had a different director in Rian Johnson and seemed promising from its trailers. However, the film only managed to create a huge divide between critics and fans. The critics loved it, praising the film very heavily. However, the majority of fans were outraged at the waste of 2 and a half hours they had paid their money to see. One of the biggest complaints with the film was the unnecessary side characters and scenes that did not feel that they belonged in a star wars film. Also, fans were horrified at the iconic character of Luke Skywalker being completely ruined and changed in ways fans did not want to see. Added to what felt like an awfully forced romance between Rey and Kylo Ren and you get the worst thing to come out of star wars since the galactic dance-off in Kinect star wars.

10. Star Wars the Rise of Skywalker (2019)

A film that can be described as nothing more than a colossal disappointment. This was meant to the grand finale, the final ever film from the skywalker saga. Instead, the film fell flat on its face. After an amazing amount of excitement, the film that had the task of capping off a franchise that had spanned 43 years failed miserably. Financially, it was a success but no amount of money could've made up for the awful characters, the multitude of plot holes and the awful ending. Many characters, such as Finn and Kylo Ren, who had been such important characters throughout the trilogy were ruined and all of the work that had been put into developing their characters went to waste. My personal biggest complaint was the fact that the film felt less like a star wars film and more like a Disney film, which is definitely a bad thing.

9. Star Wars Attack of the Clones (2002)

So much promise is what this film had. Attack of the Clones did some things right. The battles were entertaining. The new planets were breathtaking. It introduced future fan favourites the clone troopers. However, any moment where there isn't a battle, or there aren't clone troopers is nothing but boring. One of the worst parts of the film was the awful chemistry between Anakin and Padme, which is a shame as they spend pretty much all of their screen time together. It left a lot to be desired from the prequel trilogy and caused a lot more pressure to be put on Revenge of the Sith.

8. Star Wars the Phantom Menace (1999)

Arguably one of the most anticipated films of all times. The first Star Wars film in 16 years. The hype was massive. The phantom menace was a film so eagerly awaited that it just never could have lived up to the hype. The films main problem simply was that it was boring. There was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much sitting and talking instead of doing actual star wars stuff which held the film back majorly, especially given its 2-hour runtime. The only real positive of the film was Darth Maul, who single-handedly brings this film to a higher level than all of the ones I have shown previously

7. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Nothing more than a bang average film that allowed Disney to fill the time between the Last Jedi and the Rise of Skywalker. Despite being Disneys only Star Wars box office disaster, Solo was still a decent film with plenty of promise for future spinoff films in the Star Wars universe. It gave fans a chance to see how Han met iconic characters such as Chewbacca and Lando, and overall increased fans love for this already popular character.

6. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Some call this film boring but that's incredibly harsh. Rogue one was a surprising success, both critically and financially. The characters were fairly memorable and the action sequences were fantastic. the film had incredible cinematography and helped fans see exactly what happened between Revenge of the Sith and a New Hope. The new planets were incredible and there were plenty of nods back to previous Star Wars films to get fans excited, and many of them regard this film very highly, meaning Disney knew that Star Wars spinoff films could be very successful.

5. Star Wars Revenge of the Sith (2005)

All of a sudden, many Star Wars fans have begun to appreciate Revenge of the Sith as the decent film that it is. It had many iconic moments such as the Anakin vs Obi-Wan fight, as well as one of the greatest scenes in any Star Wars film; Order 66. While it was not received too well initially, many now see Revenge of the Sith as an iconic film that they would not want to alter at all. Despite this, there is a big problem, namely the excruciatingly bad performance of Hayden Christensen as Anakin. Overall a decent film with many more strong points than issues.

4. Star Wars Return of the Jedi (1983)

When compared to the first two films in the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi just does not stack up. However, when compared to many of the other films in the series, this films strong points begin to show. The fight between Luke and Vader is an emotional rollercoaster, and the space battle outside of the second death star was amazing. There was some criticism about the film being quite childish, mainly due to the introduction of Ewoks, but overall it's a solid chapter in the Star Wars saga.

3. Star Wars the Force Awakens (2015)

It was the first Star Wars film in 10 years. The expectations were immense. Many thought that the Force Awakens would never be able to live up to the hype. However, they were wrong. It introduced Star Wars to a whole new generation and promised so much more for future Disney/Star Wars films. The characters were intriguing. Many of the action sequences were incredible. There were very few things to criticise about the film, mainly that it felt a bit similar to a New Hope. Otherwise one of the best Star Wars films ever made.

2. Star Wars a New Hope (1977)

The one that started it all. A near-perfect introduction to what would become one of the most iconic and long-running film franchises of all time. It introduced some iconic characters, locations and an amazing soundtrack that will live forever as one of cinemas greatest. There were almost no weak points of the film and audiences were shocked at the incredible quality of the film.

1. Star Wars the Empire Strikes Back (1980)

A film so good that it could be re-released today and still hold up against newer films. A perfect part 2 to the incredible success that was A New Hope. No one thought that this chapter would outshine the first but it somehow did. As well as having maybe the most iconic film moment of all time, Empire Strikes Back continued to build on a New Hope introducing yet more iconic characters and locations as well as adding to the already perfect soundtrack. It will take a lot for any future Star Wars film to top this, which is the peak of the franchise.
